TOURS › TEL AVIV & THE COAST
Tel Aviv & Jaffa
A century ago it was sand dunes; today it is one of the world’s great small cities. Tel Aviv is the counterweight to Jerusalem (secular, seaside, openly delicious) and it is best understood on foot with someone who grew up nearby. Old Jaffa’s stone lanes and harbor open the day; the Carmel Market feeds it, stall by stall; Bauhaus boulevards, Independence Hall and Neve Tzedek’s quiet streets fill the afternoon. For heritage travelers this is also the story of the state being born, declared in a modest hall on Rothschild Boulevard in 1948.
