TOURS › NEGEV DESERT
Negev & Ramon Crater
Half of Israel is desert, and most visitors never see it. Their loss. The Negev is where David Ben-Gurion chose to live and be buried, overlooking the wilderness of Zin; where ibex walk the rim of Makhtesh Ramon, a geological crater forty kilometers long that looks borrowed from Mars; and where desert agriculture, Nabatean ruins and star-filled skies rewrite what you thought a desert was. This is the unhurried day: long horizons, short walks, strong coffee at a lookout, and the kind of silence cities have forgotten.
Highlights
- Makhtesh Ramon, the great crater rim walk
- Ibex, if we're lucky (we're usually lucky)
- Ben-Gurion's desert home and grave at Sde Boker
- The wilderness of Zin panorama
- Nabatean ruins on the ancient incense route
- Desert-grown lunch (yes, wine grows here too)
A typical day
South past Beersheba to Sde Boker: Ben-Gurion's modest desert home, and the breathtaking grave-site balcony over the wilderness of Zin.
Ein Avdat's white canyon or the Nabatean city of Avdat, then on to Mitzpe Ramon for lunch on the crater rim.
The Makhtesh: geology that looks like another planet, ibex on the cliffs, and the long golden drive home.
